Outdoor Concrete Lives a Hard Life Here
Pool deck resurfacing is the outdoor side of our work in West Palm Beach, and it covers pool decks, patios, lanais and screened porches. These slabs sit in full sun, take splashed chlorinated water every day and get soaked by summer storms. Over time the old surface cracks, fades, stains and gets rough on bare feet. Resurfacing puts a new, textured layer over sound concrete so the deck looks fresh and is safer to walk on when wet.
Signs your deck needs work
- Hairline cracks or old repairs that show through the surface
- A rough, sandy texture that scrapes feet
- Faded or blotchy color and rust or algae stains
- An old coating that is peeling or flaking
- Areas that hold water after rain
- A surface that gets uncomfortably hot by midday
Options for pool decks and patios
HomeGuide's pool deck guide lists several systems. A spray-textured cool deck finish, often sold as Kool Deck, is described as non-slip and helps lower surface temperature. Epoxy coatings, decorative overlays and stamped overlays offer different looks and textures. Sealing alone suits a deck in good shape that just needs protection. We help you choose based on how the deck is used, how much sun it gets and the condition of the slab.
Why epoxy alone is not always the answer outdoors
Standard epoxy is not UV stable; HomeGuide scores it only poor to fair for UV. In full sun, a plain epoxy deck can yellow and chalk. Outdoor systems need a topcoat that tolerates UV, polyaspartic for example, plus enough texture for grip. Color matters too. Darker colors absorb more heat, so we usually steer pool decks toward lighter tones.
Prep for outdoor slabs
Outdoor concrete in a wet climate often has cracks from settling and from roots, old patches and areas of soft or flaking surface. We pressure wash, grind or profile the concrete, repair cracks and remove loose material. Outdoor slabs can also hold moisture after rain. We plan installs for dry stretches and check slab moisture and dew point before applying anything.
Working around the pool
We protect the pool, coping, screens and nearby plants during prep and coating. Drains and expansion joints are kept open so water moves the way it should. We talk with you about whether the pool can be used during the job and when the deck can take foot traffic and furniture again.
Storm season and HOAs
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and outdoor work in those months has to fit between storms. Patio furniture, planters and grills need to come off the deck before we start. If your home is in a community with an association, check whether deck colors or finishes need approval. We can provide samples and product sheets for the board.

Pool Deck Resurfacing Questions
What is the coolest pool deck surface?
According to HomeGuide, Kool Deck is a non-slip finish that helps bring surface temperature down. Lighter colors also help, since dark surfaces absorb more heat.
Can my pool deck be resurfaced instead of replaced?
If the concrete is sound, usually yes. Cracks get repaired and a new surface goes on top. If the slab is heaving or broken, replacement may be needed, and we will tell you.
How long does pool deck resurfacing take?
Most decks take a few days, depending on size, repairs, weather and the system. We give you a schedule with the estimate.
Can you coat a screened lanai?
Yes. Lanais often suit flake or solid systems with a UV-stable topcoat and texture. We protect the screens and frames during the work.
Will chlorine or salt systems harm the new surface?
Outdoor-rated systems are made for pool water, but rinsing the deck now and then keeps buildup down. We tell you which cleaners to use.
